In a small town, the life of Jack Gladney, a professor of Hitler studies at a prestigious university and a devoted family man, is turned upside down by an unexpected catastrophe. A chemical spill from a passing train releases a toxic substance into the air, creating what comes to be known as the "Airborne Toxic Event." As panic ensues and people scramble for answers, Jack must confront his deepest fear: his own mortality.
