The tranquil life of Katie Lapp, an Amish woman known for her striking beauty, seems to lack a certain essence that she can't quite put her finger on. This feeling intensifies when a stranger arrives in their Lancaster County community; he is an outsider, or "Englisher," searching for the child Katie had given up for adoption 19 years prior. This encounter sets in motion a series of events that challenge the deeply rooted traditions and beliefs of Katie's Amish lifestyle, ultimately leading her to confront her past and perhaps redefine her understanding of belonging, love, and family.
