The Lower Depths

In the dimly-lit streets of 19th century Japan, a group of diverse residents live together in an old, worn boardinghouse. The eclectic ensemble includes a reticent elderly man, his mysterious past hidden behind his enigmatic gaze; and a once-famous actor, now aging gracefully into obscurity as he reminisces over past performances. The quiet routine of their lives is disrupted when Sutekichi, an amoral thief with a penchant for trouble, enters the fray. He quickly becomes involved in a tumultuous love triangle with the landlady Osugi and her younger sister, Okayo.As their lives become entangled in deception, passion, and betrayal, Sutekichi finds himself torn between his illicit affair with Okayo and his lingering feelings for Osugi. Unable to keep the secret any longer, he breaks off his relationship with Osugi, inadvertently setting into motion a chain of events that will shatter their fragile existence. Driven by her wounded pride and jealousy, Osugi takes revenge on Sutekichi by revealing his infidelity to her brutish husband, who is quick to react with violent fury. The once tranquil boardinghouse descends into chaos as the love triangle explodes into violence, forever altering the lives of its inhabitants and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
