Vada Sultenfuss, a teenage girl living in a world of death, is trying to navigate life and love amidst her unique circumstances. With her mother deceased and her father operating a funeral parlor, Vada's obsession with death permeates her daily existence. In an attempt to win the affection of her enigmatic English teacher and find solace in self-expression, she joins a summer poetry class. However, this tumultuous period is further complicated by her best friend Thomas J.'s persistent loyalty despite his own allergies, her father's newfound romance with the spirited Shelly, and an emotional journey that challenges Vada's understanding of love, loss, and life itself.
