Journey to the West

In 2014, Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-Liang embarked on a unique cinematic endeavor at the Marseille International Film Festival (FID). Unfamiliar with his host city, he decided to approach the project as a traveler might, capturing the vibrant Mediterranean atmosphere and warm sunshine of late summer. The film stars Denis Lavant, a renowned French actor, and Lee Kang-Sheng playing Xuanzang, with Tsai's distinctive style melding elements of documentary and narrative storytelling in this immersive exploration. This short film, titled "Journey to the West," would go on to receive critical acclaim and be selected as the opening film at the Berlin International Film Festival that same year.
