Norman Dale, once a promising college basketball coach now tainted by failure, is presented with an opportunity to rebuild his career as he takes charge of a struggling high school team in a rural Indiana community. His journey isn't smooth sailing though; he has to deal with the scrutiny and skepticism from the townspeople, particularly due to his abrasive personality and unorthodox selection of Shooter, an ex-player with a history of alcohol addiction, as his assistant coach. As Dale tries to instill discipline and teamwork within the group, an important player, Jimmy Chitwood, is persuaded by a teacher to quit basketball in order to focus on his academics. The movie delves into themes of redemption, second chances, and the power of resilience as Dale navigates the challenges and expectations while trying to create a winning team.
