Malik, an African-American teenager gifted in athletics, is awarded a track scholarship to attend the prestigious Columbus University, hoping that his physical prowess will enable him to bypass the demanding academic requirements. However, Malik's perspective on life and society is about to change profoundly as he encounters Fudge, an unconventional, intellectually driven character who has been attending the university for six years without graduating. Rather than fitting into Malik's pre-existing beliefs about race and politics in America, Fudge offers a fresh, thought-provoking approach that challenges Malik's assumptions and prompts him to reflect on his own identity and role within society as he navigates through college life.
