In the aftermath of the Civil War, Henry Moon (a convict) encounters an unusual legal stipulation in a remote American town. However, he stumbles upon a peculiar law within this small community: any unmarried or widowed woman has the power to spare a condemned man from the gallows by marrying him. Set against the backdrop of post-war America, the film delves into themes of desperation, survival, and the complexities of human connection in an uncertain time. As Henry navigates this unforeseen predicament, he must navigate through the moral dilemmas and societal pressures that arise from this unique law, while also discovering the true meaning of love, sacrifice, and commitment within a rapidly changing world.
