Set in 1871, the film follows the story of professional gambler John Devlin as he elopes with Sandy Poli, daughter of railroad tycoon Marko Poli. As they embark on their journey to Ft. Abercrombie by stage, Sandy, who has a keen eye for business, plans to use the couple's nest egg of $20,000 to purchase land options in anticipation of the expanding railroad. With the hope of selling these options at a profit, they strive to build a future together amidst the turbulent landscape of the American frontier.During their travels, they encounter Jim Bender and Bigtree Collins, influential figures in the town of Fargo who have established near-complete control over its affairs. Aware of these powerful adversaries' intentions to drive out local farmers, Devlin becomes determined to protect the community's interests. As they continue northward on the "River Bird," Sandy and John meet an irascible old seafarer named Captain Bounce. Their peaceful river voyage is disrupted when two henchmen from Bender's crew, Slagin and Carp, board their boat with the malicious intent of stealing Devlin's money at gunpoint.In response to this daring robbery, Captain Bounce gives chase to the robbers in an attempt to retrieve the stolen $20,000, setting the stage for a thrilling confrontation that will determine the couple's fate and challenge the greed-driven forces threatening their new frontier community.
