Set during the Great Depression, this film narrates a tale of intertwining lives in the small town of Spooner, Missouri. Calef embarks on a journey from Michigan to California but finds himself temporarily employed by the enigmatic Lute for a series of odd jobs upon stopping in Spooner. Intrigue arises when Calef develops feelings for Hannah, Lute's fiery niece. However, her marriage to the abusive, alcoholic Sidney complicates matters, as Sidney dreams of inheriting his uncle-in-law's wealth. An unusual preacher further adds intrigue into the mix, causing tensions to rise between the characters. Amidst the backdrop of economic hardship, Calef struggles to keep his mysterious past a secret and navigates through the complex emotional terrain, grappling with his growing attachment to Sidney's vulnerable wife.
