Restoration

In this historical drama, Robert Merivel is a young physician who catches the eye of King Charles II after saving the life of someone close to the monarch. Embracing the opulent lifestyle at court, Merivel soon finds himself embroiled in a web of political intrigue and personal turmoil when he is ordered by the King to marry his mistress in order to diffuse tensions with the Queen. Unable to resist the affection that develops between him and his new wife, Merivel's life takes a turn for the worse as the King eventually discovers their love and removes his title and wealth. Through a series of misfortunes and reunions with an old friend, Merivel is forced to confront the true meaning of being a physician and rediscovers his passion for healing in the most unexpected circumstances.
