In the summer of the late 70s in East Germany, Nelly Senff embarks on a journey to leave her harrowing past behind by crossing the Berlin Wall with her young son, Alexej. Following her boyfriend Wassilij's seemingly tragic death three years prior, she fakes marriage with a West German to gain entry into the Western world. However, as they settle into their new life, Nelly begins to grapple with haunting questions about her former lover. The Allied Secret Service becomes intrigued by Wassilij's mysterious disappearance and starts investigating, causing Nelly to question whether he might still be alive and if he could have been a spy. As she navigates the tension between uncovering the truth and forging a brighter future, Nelly is confronted with difficult choices that challenge her understanding of love, loyalty, and identity.
